Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves. What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. How are fees determined for a local move? Most moving companies use an hourly rate for local moves. This price normally includes the driving time required to arrive at your home, to your destination and then back to the moving company. What are linehaul charges? These are basic charges for long distance move that are calculated by the weight of your shipment and total mileage. What should I do with my plants? We recommend that you move your plants yourself as they can suffer from a lack of light and water and temperature extremes in the truck. Please note that some countries will not allow the import of plants or other agricultural items if you’re planning an overseas move. What is full-value coverage? If you purchase this type of coverage, your moving company will either replace a damaged or lost item with an article of similar kind and value, pay you for the replacement cost, repair the item or pay you the cost of any necessary repairs. Why do movers place shipments from more than one household on a trailer during long distance moves? This is much more efficient and allows the moving company to lower their costs. Direct shipments are usually available, but they will cost you more. What is a flight charge? This is an extra charge for carrying items up or down flights of stairs. Should I purchase valuation insurance? Check with your homeowner’s insurance policy to see exactly what is covered. Depending on your particular policy, you may want to consider purchasing valuation insurance in case of damage during your move. How can I ensure that special items will treated with extra-special care? You can move some of the items that have high sentimental or monetary value yourself. If you prefer to let your movers complete this task, make sure you clearly indicate which items you would like them to take special care with during the move. Will my movers clean my home once my move is complete? Most professional movers will clean up any mess they have made during the actual move. However, they don’t perform general house cleaning so you must hire a professional cleaning service or perform this task yourself. What are bulky articles? These refer to heavy items such as cars, snowmobiles, trailers or cars. Extra charges are usually applied because these items take up more space in the moving trucks/vans and require additional labour to load and unload. |
